According to the Hindu calendar, Rishi Panchami (ऋषि पंचमी) falls on Shukla Paksha Panchami in the Bhadrapada month. Women expressed their reverence towards the seven sages. There are four cast in Hinduism that are followed and this Vrat can be observed by any four cast. Women’s sins will be completely erased by this Vrat that you have committed knowingly or unknowingly. But you have to follow all the important rituals like Puja, Vrat Katha, Muhurat, etc.
If you fast for seven consecutive years, you should make seven gold idols of Sapt Rishi in the eighth. One should worship this gold idol, feed them and Yugmak-Brahmins, and immerse the idols of the seven sages.

ऋषि पंचमी व्रत कथा के अनुसार विदर्भ देश में उत्तंक नामक एक सदाचारी ब्राह्मण रहते थे। उनकी पत्नी बड़ी पतिव्रता थी, जिनका नाम सुशीला था। उन ब्राह्मण दंपत्ति के एक पुत्र और एक पुत्री थी। विवाह योग्य होने पर उन्होने कन्या का विवाह कर दिया। दैवयोग से कुछ दिनों बाद वह लड़की विधवा हो गई। दुःखी ब्राह्मण दम्पति कन्या समेत गंगा तट पर चले गए और वहीं कुटिया बनाकर रहने लगे।
एक दिन ब्राह्मण कन्या सो रही थी अचानक उसका शरीर कीड़ों से भर गया। कन्या की ऐसी स्थिति देख उसकी मां परेशान हो गई और उसने जाकर अपने पति से पूछा हे प्राणनाथ! मेरी साध्वी कन्या की यह गति होने का क्या कारण है?
उत्तंक जी उस समय समाधि में थे उन्होंने इस घटना का पता लगाकर बताया कि पूर्व जन्म में भी यह कन्या ब्राह्मणी थी। लेकिन इसने रजस्वला होते हुए बर्तन छू दिए थे। इस जन्म में भी इसने लोगों की देखा-देखी ऋषि पंचमी का व्रत नहीं किया। इसलिए इसके शरीर में कीड़े पड़े हैं। धर्म-शास्त्रों की मान्यता है कि रजस्वला स्त्री पहले दिन चाण्डालिनी, दूसरे दिन ब्रह्मघातिनी तथा तीसरे दिन धोबिन के समान अपवित्र होती है और वह चौथे दिन स्नान करके शुद्ध होती है। यदि ये कन्या शुद्ध मन से ऋषि पंचमी का व्रत करें तो इसके सारे दुःख अवश्य दूर हो जाएंगे और अगले जन्म में इसे अटल सौभाग्य की प्राप्त करेगी।
पिता की आज्ञा से पुत्री ने ऋषि पंचमी का व्रत एवं पूजन किया। व्रत के प्रभाव से उसके सारे दुख दूर हो गए और अगले जन्म में उसे अटल सौभाग्य की प्राप्ति हुई।
How to perform Rishi Panchami Puja?
- You have to wake up early morning and take a bath.
- Wear clean clothes and make your home clean.
- Design a Mandala in a square shape with turmeric, kumkum, and ragis in your house.
- Now placed Sapt Rishi idols.
- Pour pure water and Panchamrit on the idols.
- Now use Sandalwood and flowers as a treatment for Saptarishi.
- Enrobe sacred thread Yojnopavita.
- Then offer white clothes with fruits and sweets etc.
- Light the lamp and keep incense.
- Women are not allowed to eat grains after pledging Rishi Panchami rather they eat special Rice.
